How a one-way clutch bearing works
An HF one-way clutch bearing (drawn cup roller clutch) looks like a drawn cup needle roller bearing, but inside the thin outer cup are ramps and spring-loaded needle rollers. When the shaft turns in the freewheeling direction the rollers roll freely; when it tries to turn the other way, the rollers wedge between the ramps and the shaft and transmit torque. Engagement is almost instant and silent.
Because the clutch is simply pressed into a housing bore, it replaces bulkier ratchets and freewheels in indexing drives, backstops and overrunning applications. The shaft must be hardened and ground because the rollers run directly on it. HF clutches transmit torque but no radial load, so they are usually combined with needle roller bearings on either side; HFL versions integrate bearing support in the same cup.
Send us the clutch designation, or the shaft diameter, outside diameter and width, plus the required torque and freewheel direction, and we will quote a matching one-way clutch bearing.
