What is a pillow block bearing?
A pillow block bearing (also called a mounted bearing unit or Y-bearing unit) combines a bearing insert with a housing that bolts directly onto a machine frame. Because the housing is already machined to take the insert, installation is quick and no separate housing bore has to be produced.
Inserts are usually wide-inner-ring ball bearings with a spherical outside diameter, so they can compensate for small misalignment when mounted. They are fixed to the shaft with set screws, an eccentric locking collar or an adapter sleeve, and most are sealed and pre-greased. Common housing styles are the standard pillow block (UCP), square and oval flange units (UCF, UCFL), take-up units (UCT) and adapter-sleeve versions (UKP).
When an insert wears out, you can usually replace only the insert and keep the housing. Send us the designation printed on the housing and insert, or the shaft diameter and housing style, and we will quote the right unit.
