Why choose stainless steel bearings?
Standard bearing steel rusts quickly when it meets water, steam, cleaning chemicals or salty air. Stainless steel bearings are made from hardenable martensitic stainless steel (AISI 440C is the common industry grade), which is hard enough for rolling contact while resisting corrosion, so the bearings keep running smoothly where ordinary bearings would pit and seize.
They are the usual choice for food processing and packaging lines, beverage bottling, dairy and meat plants, pharmaceutical equipment and marine or outdoor applications. Combined with suitable seals or shields and a food-grade lubricant, they help reduce unplanned stops and contamination risk in hygienic areas. Stainless steel has a somewhat lower load rating than chrome bearing steel of the same size, so select the bearing with this in mind.
